Let the Christmas Decorating Begin!

Here in the deep south, it’s hard to let go of summer. Today is November 27 and I have the windows open to 74° temps. So I don’t usually think about putting up summery decor until Christmas things start to come out and I need room. Today, I say “see ya in the spring” to the last of the summer decor and let the Christmas decorating begin.

Summer decor items

I haven’t decorated for Christmas the past few years, but want to bring it all back out this year. Start the holiday memory foundations for Dani, the only grandchild who will be around here this year. Wish we all lived closer together! We’ll all pile up in the car and drive 12 hours to go see Sophie – and her parents, of course – after Christmas.

So decoration #1. Mr. and Mrs. Claus salt and pepper shakers sitting on top of a shabby, chippy, white, box and a hand made Santa ornament hanging on front. The inside of the box has cubbies, but I haven’t decided what to put in there yet. That decision will be made as I go through boxes.

How about you? Did you start early, before Thanksgiving, and git ‘er done or are you hanging back? Are you not decorating at all this year or going all out? Or somewhere in between?

Happy Thanksgiving Week!

Are you who are in the US with me busy with Thanksgiving plans? Are you hosting anything this year or going to mess up someone else’s kitchen? Or staying home in your sweats, curled up – or laid out – on your comfy sofa? (That sounds heavenly.) We haven’t decided yet, with Thanksgiving only four days away, if we’re having it here or our daughter’s. Or even somewhere else. Our immediate family is small, so it’s all casual. No big deal. Unless we choose to make it that way by inviting my husband’s siblings, and their families here. He was the middle of seven children, so you see that can get pretty big, pretty quick. We might do Christmas. Or might not.

Anyway, just wanted to take time out to share this photograph of an unknown lady and her “Thanksgiving turkeys.” That’s what the photo caption says. I wonder if they were pets or if she did actually kill and eat one?

Primitive Thanksgiving Decorating — A Shoe Shine Tote Decorated For Thanksgiving —

Let’s do a little primitive Thanksgiving decorating. You might know, I love primitives for fall. See: Primitives and Fall – A Match Made In Heaven

Here’s a fun, little, primitive, shoe shine tote with great, naturally crackled, brown paint.

Primitive Wood Shoe Shine Box

Kinda looks a little plain just sitting there like that. But it is full of potential! I started thinking how good it would be decorated for Thanksgiving and here is the result:

Then I thought about other holidays and did a quick “let’s see.”

Valentine’s Day:

Spring and summer:

Easter:

Christmas:

This little tote can be used so many ways! How about a beachy them for summer? Filled with pine cones for fall and winter? Mason jars with tea light candles for January? Or through all seasons, in your kitchen holding tea towels or utensils? A bathroom holding soap, toiletries or hand towels and rags? In the laundry room for…. laundry room stuff. A remote control caddy. The list is endless!

Where can you get one of these for your very own? Well I’ll tell ya. This one’s for sale! It can be yours either here in the blog shop or in my Etsy shop. (Covering all my bases, don’t-cha know?) This is one of the things that I’ll think I’ll continue to use until someone buys it or I’m convinced it should live here indefinitely.

Sherbert Cups, Epson Salt and Candles for Christmas Decorating

What can you do when you have some Dollar Tree candles, 3 glass sherbert cups and some Epson Salt? Why, make this centerpiece, of course!

Sherbert Candle Poinsettia Centerpiece

I didn’t do any decorating again this year. Boo, hiss. You can read about it here: Why I May Not Go To Yard or Estate Sales For A Long, Long Time. Prepare to be both appalled and amazed. We’ve cleaned up 90% of that mess, but are still trying to climb out of that mountain of junk wonderful, unique items.

So anyway. I had three glass sherbert cups that I was wondering what to do with. They don’t sell well and I was debating on putting them in a yard sale box or try them in a booth for a bit. Then I thought of this.

Oh. You can’t see the cups? How ’bout now?

Christmas Centerpiece

The candles and the Epson Salt came from the Dollar Tree. The poinsettia ring is actually a garland of sorts that wants to stay curled up in a circle. It was in a box sitting by the door of our house that I got out from who knows where? It all came together nicely.

I rolled the candles around in the salt first just to get a little bit of “ice” sticking to them. Not much will stick, mind you, but just enough to give them character. Put the candles in the cups then pour the salt around them. Is that quick and easy enough for ya?

There’s something about that room that messes with the camera making the colors all wrong. The true color of the poinsettias are the picture above.

Hope you all have a wonderfully blessed Christmas however you choose to spend it. We’ll have a small gathering at my daughter’s. Quiet, but oh, so fun watching little Dani discovering the magic of Christmas.
