There was a Monday estate sale 55 miles from me — my first estate sale of the year. The day was dreary, drizzly, cold, and getting colder throughout the day. What drug me out of my warm house besides the dopamine high of shopping an estate sale? These Yaffa DoReMi hooks.
They were in the estate sale pictures and were screwed into the wall, high above the closet doors. I knew I couldn’t reach them without a ladder, so I got my husband to ride along. He stuck a sold sticker on them until he could get them down while I shopped.

A lot of people don’t know about these and that they sell pretty well. Although, I suppose depending on where you’re trying to sell them. eBay seems to be a race to the bottom, but I sold one on Etsy last month for $32. And… confession here… I kinda scrubbed it with a Brillo pad and took off some of the sheen, especially in one particular spot. This was fully disclosed, well not the part where I did it, and pictured it as best I could. Buyer was happy and said “great shape” and “as described.” Had it been pristine, I’d have put a higher price on it, but not to go over $45-50. I’m listing these for around $40 or so. Two are not marked Yaffa. They have no mark at all, so that might bring the price down a bit.
I’m making a trend prediction here. You know how bows are popular right now? No? Well, they are. The same kind of decor bows that were so popular in the ’90s. My prediction is that the ’90s hearts are next. So I’m buying them. We’ll see if that was wise or not in a few months or even years from now. This is a toothbrush and toothpaste tube holder.
It’s sitting on a picture of butterflies, which as is, is not so great, but I thought maybe I could take that bottom part, that turned out to be a postcard, and reframe it. Or not. That might have been a junk buy. The glass in the frame was quite possibly the only thing worth getting there.
I was happy to find the large, crewel flower basket picture in the bathroom of all places, and to walk back into the living room and see that no one had yet snatched the bird needlepoint picture. It was well into the sale by then. I guess the other people there weren’t looking for the same things I was.
Oh, my! The Bohemian candy dish! It’s cut – ok, it doesn’t feel cut actually, but that seems to be what people call it – to reveal the blue glass. Another thing that had gone unnoticed. Or maybe nobody bought it because the side of the tip of the knob has a chip, but no… it did not seem to have been moved from its spot on the hard to reach shelf. The chip will cause it to not have quite as much value, but it’s too pretty, the chip hard to see, and the whole dish unusual – the lidded candy dishes are hard to find – for someone to diss it because of that. I’ll probably price it around $25 in the booth.
Other things you can see in the pictures, include the blue trim, enamel pitcher, The Modern Hymnbook, a tiny Teachings Of Jesus book, small, Italian metal frame with girl print, the mirrored tray (we sell a lot of those), the woven covered basket thing that I can’t think of the name right now, starts with an “M”, a bird ornament, an enamel bowl, and not pictured are two black cat figurines. I believe the only things not going to the booth are the DoReMi hooks and the hymnbook. I’ll put them on Etsy. Total spent? $25.00. Approximate value? About $245 or so. Added bonus? Time spent with my husband and a Cracker Barrel breakfast.
